A hidden gem in South Kitsap: Square Lake

Square Lake is a hidden gem in Kitsap County that offers a peaceful escape from the city.

If you are looking for a quiet and scenic place to enjoy nature, fishing, or picnicking, you might want to check out Square Lake in Kitsap County. Square Lake is a small lake located near Port Orchard, about 15 miles southwest of Seattle. The lake covers over 7 acres of surface area and is home to largemouth bass, bluegill, bullhead catfish, and yellow perch. It also attracts waterfowl and other wildlife. The park also has a loop trail near the lakeshore and some spurs into the adjacent forest. The trail system is small and not well maintained, but it offers a nice way to stretch your legs and enjoy the solitude. The trail is about 1.2 miles long and has no elevation gain. It is suitable for hikers of all levels and dogs on leash.

Square Lake is part of Square Lake Park, a former state park that was transferred to Kitsap County in October 2020. The park has a parking lot, an all-gender bathroom, picnic tables, and charcoal grills. You can access the park without a Discover Pass, which makes it a convenient and affordable option for locals and visitors alike.

Whether you want to relax by the water, have a picnic with your family, or catch some fish, you will find something to enjoy at Square Lake Park. Just remember to pack out what you pack in and respect the natural environment.

The lake itself is not suitable for swimming, as there are signs warning of possible contamination from agricultural runoff. However, you can still enjoy the views of the lake and the surrounding wetlands and forests. You can also bring your own kayak or canoe and explore the lake by water. Fishing is allowed, but you need a valid fishing license and follow the state regulations.
